How to split a PDF by bookmarks
- Choose or drop a PDF that has bookmarks.
- Select Split by bookmarks.
- Download the ZIP with one PDF per chapter.
One file per chapter
The PDF is split at every top-level bookmark, and each file is named after its bookmark, so you can tell the chapters apart at a glance. Pages before the first bookmark, such as a cover or contents page, become their own file. All files download together as a ZIP.
PDFs without bookmarks
This only works for PDFs that have bookmarks, also called an outline. If a file has none, you will see a message saying so. In that case, use Split PDF to divide it by page ranges instead.
Questions about Split PDF by bookmarks
Are my files uploaded when I split a PDF by bookmarks?
No. Scissor PDF runs a PDF engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your files are read from your disk into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.
How do I know if my PDF has bookmarks?
Open it in a PDF reader and look for a bookmarks or outline panel. If the file has none, Scissor PDF tells you when you open it here.
Are sub-bookmarks used too?
No. The file is split at top-level bookmarks only, so each chapter stays together with its sections.
What happens to the pages before the first bookmark?
They become a separate file, so nothing is lost.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no account, no daily task limit and no watermark added to your documents. Because the work happens on your own computer, there is no server cost per file for us to recover.
