How to add bookmarks to a PDF

  1. Choose or drop the PDF. Any bookmarks it already has appear in the list.
  2. Click a page or select Add bookmark, type a title, and adjust the page number if needed. Remove any entries you do not want.
  3. Select Save bookmarks and download the result.

How the bookmarks are saved

Saving replaces the PDF's bookmarks with the list you see, in a single level. The file is also set to open with the bookmarks panel showing, in readers that support it. Titles can be written in any language.

One level only

Nested bookmarks, such as sections inside chapters, are not supported. Only top-level bookmarks are shown when you open a file, and if it had nested bookmarks, they are replaced by your flat list when you save. Keep the original if you need them.

Questions about Add Bookmarks to PDF

Are my files uploaded when I add bookmarks to a PDF?

No. Scissor PDF runs a PDF engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your files are read from your disk into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.

Can I edit bookmarks that are already in the PDF?

Yes. Existing top-level bookmarks appear in the list, where you can rename them, change their page numbers or remove them.

Can I make nested bookmarks?

No. Bookmarks are saved as a single flat list. Any nested bookmarks in the original file are replaced when you save.

Why do the bookmarks not show when I open the file?

The file asks readers to show the bookmarks panel, but not every reader follows that. Open the sidebar or bookmarks view in your reader to see them.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no account, no daily task limit and no watermark added to your documents. Because the work happens on your own computer, there is no server cost per file for us to recover.
