How to add a background to a PDF

  1. Choose or drop your document, then the background PDF, for example your letterhead.
  2. Choose whether the background goes on every page or only the first, and whether it sits behind the content or on top.
  3. Select Add background and download the result.

How the background is placed

The first page of the background PDF is drawn on each page of your document, stretched to fit that page. For the best result, use a background with the same page size as your document, such as A4 or Letter.

Behind or on top

By default the background sits behind your content, like printing on pre-printed paper. Choose overlay to draw it on top instead, which helps when your document has a solid white background that would hide it. Either way, your text stays sharp and searchable.

Questions about Add Background to PDF

Are my files uploaded when I add a background to a PDF?

No. Scissor PDF runs a PDF engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your files are read from your disk into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.

What can I use as a background?

Any PDF. Only its first page is used. A letterhead saved as a PDF from Word, Pages or a design app works well.

Why can't I see the background?

Some documents have a solid white fill on every page that covers anything behind it. Choose overlay to draw the background on top instead.

Can I use an image as the background?

Turn the image into a PDF with JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF first, then use that file as the background.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no account, no daily task limit and no watermark added to your documents. Because the work happens on your own computer, there is no server cost per file for us to recover.
