How to add a header and footer to a PDF

  1. Choose or drop the PDF.
  2. Type text for the left, centre and right of the header, footer or both. Insert placeholders for page number, total pages, date and file name.
  3. Choose the text size and the first page, then select Add header and footer.

Placeholders

Placeholders fill in automatically on each page: the page number, the total number of pages, the date and the file name. Combine them with your own words, for example Page 3 of 12. Choose the first page to leave a cover page clean.

Any language, any script

The text is drawn with your device's fonts, so Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Hindi and every other script your device can display come out correctly. The result is part of the page and is not editable text afterwards.

Questions about Add header and footer

Are my files uploaded when I add a header and footer?

No. Scissor PDF runs a PDF engine written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab. Your files are read from your disk into the page's memory, processed there and saved back to your device. The site has no upload endpoint, and its Content Security Policy blocks the page from sending data to any other server.

Can I write Page X of Y?

Yes. Combine the page number and total pages placeholders with your own text.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Choose the page where the header and footer should start.

Can I edit the header later?

Not as text. It becomes part of the page. Keep your original file if you may need to change it.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no account, no daily task limit and no watermark added to your documents. Because the work happens on your own computer, there is no server cost per file for us to recover.
